What is a helpline?

A help line is a special service which provides listening and emotional support to anyone is distress,  in an individual, family or psycho-social crisis, who is asking for support, and could be feeling lonely, isolated, unhappy, frightened, worried, in shock.

Some services provide ‘post-disaster support’ in response to natural disasters such as hurricanes, flooding damage or earthquakes. In some contexts centres may also feel it necessary to have plans in place for possible man-made disasters such as railway/road crashes, fires, bombings and other such incidents.

Our helpline

Our helpline is open to those who have lost a loved one as a result of a sudden and violent death (suicide, murder, car accident, work accident, natural disasters, etc). After a dramatic event it can be important and helpful to open up to someone who is ready to listen and to welcome the thoughts and painful emotions that the survivor is facing.

Sometimes it can be difficult to talk with those who are experiencing the same pain, as one may fear to intensify the painful feelings. In other circumstances, one may believe not to be understood. A telephone service like ours aims to offer an empathic listening in a confidential atmosphere in which people are free to express themselves the way they prefer, without the fear of being judged.

Our service offers volunteers and professionals specifically trained on the topic of traumatic losses.

Our helpline is born from the regional campaign TOGETHER, NOT ALONE and is now active across Italy, from March 2013, through a toll-free number: 800-168678.
